This enhanced minor surgery service is commissioned by NHS South West London Integrated Care Board (SWL ICB), for patients of Merton and Sutton Borough GP practices, to provide treatment of benign, symptomatic skin and subcutaneous lesions fulfilling NHS England criteria for treatment within the NHS.
The initial, first appointment is to assess the lesion for its suitability for treatment in our service and to send a request, with the information gathered at this appointment, to South West London Integrated Care Board’s Prior Approval Panel who decide whether a treatment should be offered on the NHS.
The Prior Approvals Panel return their decision within 5 days on average. When we hear back from them, we contact you and let you know whether you have been approved for treatment or declined.
If approved, we will book you in for the procedure.
In a few cases, the problem you have been referred for may not be suitable for treatment by us and may require referral to a different specialty or hospital. In this case we will refer you back to your GP.
The procedure will be discussed with you at the appointment before any treatment is carried out, and you can ask any questions you may have.
Benign lesion minor surgery procedures are small and typically take 10-40 minutes to complete. Local anaesthetic is applied directly to the lesion with a fine needle. The local anaesthetic used is Lignocaine with Adrenaline (the same as used by dentists) or plain Lignocaine.
If you have had a reaction to these local anaesthetics before, please let your GP know when you see them initially for the referral, and also inform our staff when you make the booking. We will try to provide an alternative.
There are no sedatives or drowsiness-causing compounds used in our practice. The anaesthetic will not affect your critical faculties or ability to drive.
Please remove rings prior to the appointment for lesions on the hands/fingers. If you take any anticoagulants or antithrombotics (blood thinning medication), please inform your GP during the initial referral and also notify our staff member booking your appointment.
Mr. Mehra works with a female nurse/assistant. We strive to be respectful of our patients’ needs and sensitivities.
Dressings are applied to the area after surgery and should be kept on and dry for typically two days. It is advisable to wash hair and take a shower before the procedure if needed. Any special instructions, such as no heavy lifting or prolonged walking, will be provided at the appointment. For surgery on the foot, we advise not driving immediately after the procedure or using public transport to go home. Please note we are not able to issue certificates for time off work.
A report of your appointment/procedure will be sent to your GP.
Following the procedure, aftercare instructions will be given to you. We advise you keep the surgical wound dry for 48 hours.
If you have any concerns after the procedure please contact your GP’s surgery in the first instance.
General wound care such as dressings change are by your GP's practice and we will advise you of the after care and management plan following your treatment.
Stitches are not always needed. If your procedure requires stitches that need removal, this will be by your own GP’s Practice Nurse and you will need to book an appointment for this.
If a specimen is required to be sent for histology, the results of the histology are sent to your GP. Results typically take 4 weeks to come back. Any inquiries regarding histology results are to be directed to your GP's Practice.
